The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has initiated “Operation Restore Hope IV,” a significant security deployment aimed at tackling escalating threats in southeastern Liberia. This strategic move targets unauthorized foreign presence, cross-border crimes, and smuggling activities that have been destabilizing the region.
The AFL confirmed on Thursday, July 10, that the operation is a direct response to growing concerns over transnational crimes and illegal infiltration. These issues are particularly prevalent in border towns and rural areas across Grand Gedeh, Sinoe, Maryland, and River Gee Counties.
Intelligence reports indicate a worrying influx of unauthorized foreigners and their local collaborators involved in maritime crimes, illicit mining, smuggling, and drug trafficking. These activities pose a serious threat to both regional stability and national security.
Operation Restore Hope IV is a coordinated effort with civil authorities designed to re-establish security, safeguard Liberia’s porous borders, and protect its citizens.
“Operation Restore Hope IV is a direct action in coordination with Civil Authority to deploy a task force in Grand Gedeh, Sinoe, Maryland, and River Gee Counties to locate and deny unauthorized foreigners and locals from operating illegally on Liberian soil,” the AFL stated in its release.
As part of the operation, the AFL will conduct robust land and riverine patrols, focusing on known crossing points and hubs for illegal operations. The Liberian Coast Guard has also been deployed to secure the nation’s southeastern waters. Their mission includes intercepting suspicious maritime movements, disrupting potential trafficking routes, and preventing any individuals or groups that threaten Liberia’s internal peace from entering the country by sea.
This initiative is the latest in a series of nationwide security efforts by the AFL. In March 2025, the military launched a national patrol campaign in western Liberia, which focused on strengthening border protection, interdicting narcotics trafficking, and curbing illegal mining.
Operation Restore Hope IV is expected to continue for several weeks. The AFL has pledged full cooperation with local leaders and communities to ensure transparency, effectiveness, and public safety throughout the operation.
The Armed Forces of Liberia urges citizens in the affected counties to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel. “The safety and security of our people remain our top priority. We will continue to take decisive actions to protect Liberia’s territorial integrity,” the statement
